“Halloween’s in three weeks,” I said. It was a Monday, the fourth we’d spent together. We’d slept later than usual, and now lay lazily burrowed beneath layers of blankets, keeping each other warm.

“It is.”

“Have you thought about the party? The festival?”

“Some. Nothing serious.” He sighed and pressed his body close to me.

I found his hand and squeezed it. “We’re going to do it, Scotty. At the pace we’re going, you’re going to meet the threshold your father set. Probably early.”

“Yeah.” He brushed his lips against my shoulder. “Thanks to you.”

“We should celebrate. Like we talked about weeks ago. The store is going to be fully, truly yours. We should use the fall festival as an opportunity to proclaim your victory.”

He didn’t say anything. He didn’t move, either. I could feel his heart beating, and his warm breath brushing my skin, and the solidity of his hand in mine, but there was no indication he’d heard me.

“You’re worried,” I said. “Uneasy.”

“No. Not… It’s…”

“Is your father an honorable man? Will he stand by his word?”

“Oh, yeah. It’s not that. I guess it’s more about Ryan? And Coral? Their plan. We’ve been…I’ve been so focused on us. On myself. Curiosities. I’ve been so happy these last few weeks, and it’s been easy to forget there’s, like, a whole plot against us.”

“But if your father keeps his word, and we meet his goal, then—”

“Sure,” he said. “But what about the rest of downtown? Imagine I keep Curiosities, but I’m crowded in by, like, Citibank on one side and CVS on the other? How’s that going to work out?”

I grunted. I often found myself doing that when Scotty was right.

I suppose I’d been too happy to think about the plot, as well. When Ryan crossed my mind—his betrayal of his brother offended me more than Coral’s pure greed, which I could sort of respect—I’d feel that old, familiar desire for vengeance. But most of the time, it was easy to just stay by Scotty’s side and feel good.

I had the rest of Ryan’s life—and possibly longer—to cut him down to size. But perhaps it was time to get moving on our counter-offensive.

“We could, as they say, kill two birds with one stone.”

“What do you mean?”

I leaned in, kissing his forehead, hoping to soothe him. “I told you to trust me, and you have. We’ve focused on your store because that was your original wish, what I originally agreed to. Now that Curiosities is secure, we can expand our horizons.”

“Yeah?”

“Let’s plan a festival to end all festivals. Not just a party but…a gala. A soiree. A fête. Costumes, of course. It is Halloween, after all. Candy for the kids. Games. But…food and wine, too. Good food and wine. Dancing on the rooftop. An evening people will talk about for years to come.”

“Okay, but I can’t afford that.”

I narrowed my eyes, though it did still delight me that Scotty sometimes forgot that I was not only a literal demon with actual magical powers, but also that I was infernal nobility.
